Our Slide Transfer Process & Final Product

1.  One DVD per 2000 slides containing a TV playable slideshow of your digitized slides.
2.  Data-DVDs with High Resolution images for use on your computer.

Our Process:
Our process is different from many of our competitor's because many of their processes involve projecting your slides into a camera much like you project them onto a screen.  CJS Technologies uses professional equipment (Nikon film scanners) to scan each individual slide, photograph, or negative.  We use these dedicated films scanners because they offer much higher image quality than flatbed scanners with a transparency adapter.  This is mainly because of their high dynamic range and high true optical resolution, most scanners 'cheat' to get an equal resolution.  We then run sophisticated computer image correction algorithms on the digitized images to remove imperfections like scratches or dust.  These algorithms are known as Digital ICE, ROC, and GEM.  Our next step is to remove all the slide borders from your images and position the image correctly.  Your images will not be inverted or improperly oriented.  Your slides and photos are digitized at extremely high resolutions and will look clear and crisp.  You will be able to make large prints of the images.  When printed at 300dpi the images will be 13x19 inches.

Final Product:
After we digitize your slides and photographs, we create a DVD slideshow that displays your images in 5 second intervals.  The DVD can be viewed in any home DVD player or a DVD drive in a computer.  Make sure your DVD player is compatible with +R or -R discs.
We will also provide you with data-DVDs (or CDs for an additional charge) of your pictures at high resolution.  With these data-DVDs, you can view your pictures on your computer, print them, and e-mail them to friends and family.  The pictures work just like images you would take with your digital camera or download off the Internet.  We will also provide you with a preview DVD that will contain your images at a lower resolution, allowing you to browse your images quickly on a computer.

Technical Details:
All slides and negatives are digitized at 4000dpi.  For 35mm slides, the images are at most 5700 pixels wide and 4000 pixels tall.  When you receive your project, every slide will be correctly oriented.
Photos are digitized at 600dpi.  The resulting size of each scanned photo will depend on how large the print was to start with.  If it's 4" x 3" it will be 2400 pixels wide and 1800 pixels tall.  The high-resolution data-DVDs (or CDs) will contain these high-resolution images.
The DVD slideshow will contain your images scaled proportionally to fit within the action-safe region of your TV.  This means that you will be able to see all of the image on the TV.  If the image doesn't completely fill a screen there will be a black background either on the top/bottom or right/left.  We have to reduce the resolution of images for the DVD slideshow because of TV's limits.  You will still be left with an excellent image that is much easier to view than the original slides or photographs.  Since we only crop out the border of the slides, the entire slide including the corners will be visible.  Some outfits offering a similar service will over-crop your slides.
The slideshow DVDs are playable in almost any set-top DVD player or computer DVD drive.  Each image will be shown for 5 seconds and then the next image will appear with no transition.  We suggest limiting each DVD to 2000 images.  The slideshow DVD can actually hold more images, but finding a specific image in a DVD of more than 2000 can become a hassle.
The high-resolution DVDs that you will receive can be used in any computer's DVD drive.  These disks contain the high-resolution JPEGs of each slide, photo, or negative.  You can print, email, or edit these pictures with almost any computer (PC or Mac).  We also include a CD containing all of your digitized images at a resolution of 1280x1024 for quick viewing on a older computer.

Most Common Questions

Will the TV DVDs be compatible with my DVD Player?
And What will you do if the DVDs don't work in my player?
We use DVD+R disks that are viewable in about 95% of DVD players or in a computer with a DVD drive.

Your DVD player must be compatible with +R or -R discs or our product may not work.  You will not be able to find a company that can make discs that are compatible with these players because they will also be using +R or -R discs.  We try to use the most compatible DVD discs written in the most compatible way.

If your player is incompatible with the DVDs we provide you, you will have to get a new DVD player.  It's a inconvenience to a very small number of our customers, but potential compatibility issues should be a non-factor when deciding to have your films transferred to DVD.  There are just too many positive reasons.  DVD players are now available for under $30.  You'll end up having an extra DVD player for another TV!  Some manufacturers of inexpensive players are APEX, Coby, there are many others too.  Just ask a sales representative at the store when you look for one, or read the documentation to see if they play +R discs.
It is rare that we run into compatibility issues.  We use high-quality, high-compatibility discs written at 2.4x, the most compatible writing speed.  We also verify all discs we write, which is very important for burning working discs.  Verifying a disc means that the data that is written is checked bit-by-bit against the source files to make sure that everything is good.  We try to make our discs as compatible as possible because it is a hassle for us if a disc doesn't work.

Will I get my original slides back?
Yes, you'll get them back when the project is complete.  If for some reason you don't want them back, let us know.  We recommend having your slides sent back in archival grade slide trays so that they will take up much less space than in bulky carousels, trays, or cubes.
Do you have any hidden fees?  What do you charge extra for?
No, we have no hidden fees.  Our main fee is the price you pay per slide.  The other normal charges would be shipping and taxes.  Other charges may be upgrades such as music or a review upgrade.  If you would like an official quote prior to your project being run, please write a note on the order form that you will include with your project.  We will always contact you before charging a credit card.
Is it safe to send my slides to you?
It is extremely safe to send your slides to us.  Just make sure to use a carrier that provides a tracking number.  We have thousands of shipments every year.  In our 6 years in business, we've never had a package lost in-route to us or back to our customers.  If you're really concerned, please send us an email or call us.

Even if you take your slides somewhere in your locale they may ship them off to someone elsewhere.  Shouldn't you deal with the actual service provider?  Not only that but we offer only the highest quality transfers which probably aren't available in your area.  People from all over the world from the largest cities to small farm towns choose to send their projects to CJS Technologies.
